INTRODUCTION

This digitally compiled map includes geology, geologic provinces, and oil and gas fields of the Arabian Peninsula.  The map is part of a worldwide series on CD-ROM by the World Energy Project of the U.S. Geological Survey. The goal of the project is to assess the undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources of the world,  and to report these results by the year 2000. For data management purposes the world is divided into eight energy regions corresponding approximately to the economic regions of the world as defined by the U.S. Department of State. The Arabian Peninsula,
(part of Region 2), includes Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Yemen, Syria, The United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

Each region is then further divided into geologic provinces on the basis of natural geologic entities and may include a dominant structural element or a number of contiguous elements. Some provinces contain multiple genetically related basins.

Geologic province boundaries for the Asia are delineated using data from a number of geologic maps, and other tectonic and geographic data (see References). Offshore province boundaries are defined by the 2000-meter bathymetric contour. Each province is assigned a unique number; the first digit is the region number.  It is attempted to number the provinces in geographical groups; onshore, offshore, and combined onshore and offshore.  The list of the provinces sorted by Code is shown in Adobe Acrobat Arbnprov.pdf file.

Oil and gas field data from Petroconsultants International Data Corporation worldwide oil and gas field database are allocated to these provinces.  The geologic provinces are being further subdivided into petroleum systems and assessment units in order to appraise the undiscovered petroleum potential of selected provinces of the world.

Specific details of the data sources and map compilation are given in the metadata files (FLD2A, GEO2A, POL2A, PROV2A and MAP) on this CD-ROM. Smaller stratigraphic subdivisions of Phanerozoic rock are combined to simplify the map and to maintain consistency with other maps of the series. Precambrian rocks are undivided.  Oil and gas field markers represent field center-points published with permission from Petroconsultants International Data Corp., 1996 database.

This map is compiled using Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) ARC/INFO software.  Political boundaries and cartographic representations are based on ESRI's ArcWorld 1:3M digital coverages, and used with permission from ESRI (attachment B).  These same features are used for general reference only and have no political significance. Portions of this  Database covering the coastline and country boundaries contain intellectual property of Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI), and are used herein with permission. GETTING STARTED

If not already installed, Adobe Acrobat Reader and ESRI's ArcExplorer can be installed. Refer to text files for each platform group (Win, Mac, Unix) for additional information on setting up a system for ArcView use.

Data are provided on this CD-ROM to be used by three applications: (Note: This does not preclude the use of other applications for viewing or using these data. Please refer to the following URL for more information on software tools supporting shape files and other formats: <http://www.nationalatlas.gov/atlasftp.html>

Look for files with the following extensions as these files are tailored to give the user an overview of the data on this CD-ROM.

Adobe Acrobat Reader - Portable Document Format (pdf)

ESRI's ArcExplorer - ArcExplorer Projects (aep)

ESRI's ArcView - ArcView Projects (apr)

The Adobe Acrobat file is suggested for slower computers.  It provides graphic images of the Map Showing Geology, Oil and Gas Fields, and Geologic Provinces of the Arabian Peninsula.  It also features the accompanying Preface, Introduction, Contact Information, Data Processing Steps and List of Geologic Provinces.  The maps can be zoomed and panned. The software needed to view this file is included on this disk.

The ESRI ArcExplorer project presents the data in a simple GIS format,  that can be zoomed and panned.  In addition, the data layers can be queried.  The necessary software is included on this disk.

The ESRI Arcview project offers a more sophisticated GIS presentation of the data.  The map can be zoomed and panned.  The cartographic symbols are more refined and the data tables can be queried.  The software must be purchased from a vendor.

ESRI ArcView Project

ESRI's Arcview 3.x is used to create the U.S. Geological Survey Arcview Project.  Note ArcView software is not supplied on this CD-ROM.

There are two versions of the Arcview project found on this disk. Both can be found in the directory ARBNPROV/VIEWS.  The first, arabpen.apr, can be viewed on any platform where Arcview 3.x is already installed.  Some modifications to your system, explained below, are suggested.  The second, arabpenpc.apr, can be viewed on Windows 95/98/NT platforms without any modification.

If the operating system is Windows 95/98/NT, access the project arabpenpc.apr in the directory ARBNPROV/VIEWS.

If another operating system is used, an environmental variable, AVDATA2A, must be defined  in order to optimally access the ArcView project located in the directory ARBNPROV/VIEWS.  For a more comprehensive discussion see the install text file in the appropriate platform subdirectory of ARBNPROV/VIEWS.

On a Macintosh platform modify the "startup" file in the Preferences folder of the System folder to include:
System.SetEnvVar ("AVDATA2A", "OF97470B") An example "startup" file, startup, can be found in the directory ARBNPROV/VIEWS/MAC.  The text file, startup, can be dragged into the Preferences folder within the System folder.

Unix users will need to define AVDATA2A in the ".cshrc file." With a UNIX machine it is assumed that the CD-ROM drive is refered to as /cdrom. Modify the ".cshrc" file with a statement like:

setenv AVDATA2A /cdrom/OF97470B

Subsequently, a logout and login or "source" the .cshrc file will set the variable AVDATA2A.

Windows 95/98 users can define AVDATA2A in the autoexec.bat file as follows:
      SET AVDATA2A = <CD-ROM drive letter:

For instance if the CD-ROM drive is drive f, set this statement in your autoexec.bat:
      SET AVDATA2A = f:
The computer must be restarted for this change to take effect.

Windows NT users can define AVDATA2A by mouse clicking to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM, then ENVIRONMENT and defining AVDATA2A as the variable, and the CD-ROM drive letter followed by a colon as the value.

This Arcview project was developed in Arcview 3.0.  When opened in Arcview 3.1 there may be a message asking whether to upgrade to 3.1 tools.  It is suggested that the user respond no.  There will still be tools and buttons not intended in the original project, but they have no impact on the functionality of the project.
